"Hawk Eyed!" is the eleventh episode of The British Railway Series: The End of the LNER.

Plot

Diesels are beginning to appear on British Railways, and Gronk, 1 of the new diesel shunters, has been allocated to Copley Hill. He is doing very well with the shunting, and one day, Allen congratulates Gronk on it, also saying that Gronk could become the main yard shunter at the rate he is going. Gronk feels very pleased about it.

That afternoon, Gronk is resting at the sheds, when he overhears the engines talking about an engine returning for a visit, and that this engine was the best shunter they ever had. Gronk feels miserable about it, but he leaves before he hears Stephen remind the others that the diesel shunter hasn't yet learnt the yard layout properly.

The next morning, Gronk is shunting the trucks, when a whistle echoes from the junction, and Hawk the Great Western pannier tank enters the yard. After having a short talk about football with Allen, Hawk meets Gronk. Apparently suspicious about diesels, Hawk claims that he will have his "hawk eye" on Gronk before leaving for coal and water. Gronk feels downcast, but Stephen tells him not to worry.

Later, Gronk and Hawk are shunting. Hawk thinks that Gronk is taking too long, and tells him to just bang the truck. He proceeds to do just that to a truck, and it flies along the line towards the junction, where the Midday Express is approaching. Gronk acts quickly, and he manages to stop the truck, but ends up being derailed.

That evening, Hawk apologises to Gronk, saying that he is a great shunter, and Allen then jokes that Gronk was lucky to be so hawk eyed.
